Academic Requirements & What-If Report Resources
Academic Requirements (Advisement) [AR] Reports
The Academic Requirements (AR) Report:
- tracks your progress towards graduation, showing which requirements — school, major, minor, concentration, track — you have satisfied and which are incomplete.
- is available for most students except non-degree, visiting, School of Medicine, or Darden School of Business students.
- does not take the place of meeting with your faculty advisor. It is an advising tool to be used by you and your advisor to plan your course of study.
Using the AR Report
- To view an AR Report in SIS, students can click the My Academics tab in the SIS Student Center and Advisors can click the Advisor Center tab.
- If a requirement is marked "Satisfied," click on it to see if any in-progress classes are included. If yes, this requirement can change to "Not Satisfied" if you change your schedule or earn an unsatisfactory grade.
- Plan ahead since not all classes are offered every semester. If you plan to satisfy a requirement with a class listed below the requirement, click on the class to see which semesters it is offered.
- Use the What-if Report if you want to see how your coursework would translate if you changed your school or major.
- Do not misinterpret a requirement marked as 'Satisfied' on a 'My Planner' report or 'What-If Report' as being complete. If you create a report from the 'My Planner' page by clicking on the PLAN BY MY REQUIREMENTS button, it shows how requirements will be satisfied by classes that you plan to take but haven't done so yet. What-If Reports also include planned classes.
- If an exception was made by an advisor or school dean, it will appear once it has been processed by your school of enrollment. Course exceptions will appear in the "Courses used to satisfy this requirement" area if you are enrolled or have completed the course. Details for the exception may be accessed through the "Notes" link.
Fixing Mistakes on the AR Report
- Is there a mistake? Contact your faculty advisor, dean's office, or program director for your major/minor/concentration if the following do not appear on your report: transfer credits for a course taken at other institutions, test credits, and/or your declared major/minor/concentration.
- Does the class title appear wrong? If a class title has changed over time, only the most recent title will appear on the Academic Requirements report. Your academic transcript, grades, and course history lists, however, all show the actual title under which you were enrolled.
Definitions of Symbols & Codes on the AR Report

A requirement with additional courses/credits needed. Courses that can be used to complete
"Not Satisfied"’ requirements may be listed on the AR under “Courses Not Used” and
are sorted in alphabetical order by subject and number. The course list may be sorted by
any of the columns: Course, Description, Units, When, Grade and Status.
All of the courses listed here might not be offered during the current semester. To determine in which semester the course is taught, click on the course link, then on the view class sections button. You may select a term to see if the course you want to take is offered.

Grade Abbreviations on the AR Report
These grades are assigned to courses that were completed somewhere other than
at the University of Virginia:
- EM = Test Credit Approved for Major/Minor: courses earning advanced placement through standardized testing, for example: SAT, SAT II, IB, AP, etc. to be used for major or minor credit by schools/departments that require approval of test credit.
- PT = Pre-Matriculation Transfer: courses completed at another academic institution prior to enrolling at the University.
- PM = Pre-Matriculation Transfer Credit for Major/Minor: transfer courses completed at another academic institution prior to enrolling at the University and approved to be used for major or minor credit by schools/departments that require approval of transfer credit.
- TE = Test Credit: courses earning advanced placement through standardized testing, for example: SAT, SAT II, IB, AP, etc.
- TM = Post-Matriculation Transfer Credit for Major/Minor: transfer courses completed at another academic institution after enrolling at the University and approved to be used for major or minor credit by schools/departments that require prior approval of transfer credit.
- TR = Post-Matriculation Transfer: courses completed at another academic institution after enrolling at the University.
From the Student Center, students may request a “What-If Report”.
- It allows you to see the requirements for a major/minor/concentration other than the one you've declared.
- Enter any Area of Study (major/minor) or Concentration offered at UVa in the Program Scenario area. You can also enter any course offered at UVa in the Course Scenario area to see how enrolling in that course would affect your Academic Requirements report.
